Downtown Redevelopment – In It For The Long Haul

In 2004 we rezoned Dennisport to restore some of its old luster.  In 2007 we made similar changes to West Dennis to promote reinvestment in that village as well.  Some have asked “why haven’t we seen any changes since these rezonings?”  I like to remind people who ask those questions, that when we proposed the rezoning we were pointing out that we were trying to undo what 30 years of zoning neglect had created.  Clearly change will not occur overnight.

We have had a number of inquiries.  We have interested investors, we have interested property owners.  Unfortunately, we do not see the financial capital flowing into any of these properties.  The story below, from the Hartford Courant illustrates the problems facing redevelopment today.

Manchester Looks To Revive Abondoned Parkade Area

We clearly are not as bad off as Parkade is in Manchester, CT.  We have a number of flourishing businesses surviving the current economic situation.  We also have several new businesses that have made Dennisport and West Dennis home even during these rough times.  With supportive property owners, and supportive town government, it is only a matter of time before we start seeing improvements in these villages.
